Sometimes the Best Financial Advice Is to Do Nothing

Sep 25, 2026

Every transaction has consequences.

There is a persistent misconception that financial advice should end with a transaction. A pension is transferred, an investment is replaced or a new product is bought. In reality, one of the clearest signs of genuinely independent advice is the willingness to conclude that no change is needed.

Every transaction has consequences. There may be dealing costs, exit penalties, new platform charges, tax, time out of the market or the loss of valuable guarantees. A new arrangement also introduces new risks. The fact that something can be changed does not mean it should be.

A competent adviser should first establish what the client already owns, why it was selected, how much it costs, what guarantees or protections apply and whether it still meets the client’s objectives. Only then should alternatives be compared on a like-for-like basis.

This is particularly important with pensions and long-term investments. A transfer may look attractive because the new platform is more modern or offers a wider fund range, but the old plan may contain protected tax-free cash, guaranteed annuity rates, safeguarded benefits or unusually low charges. Those features can be impossible to recreate after transfer.

Advice also has value when it prevents emotional decisions. Markets fall, headlines become alarming and investors often feel pressure to ‘do something’. Sometimes the correct action is to rebalance. Sometimes it is to adjust risk. And sometimes it is to leave a sound strategy alone.

The test of advice should therefore be whether it improves the client’s position, not whether it creates activity. A recommendation to do nothing can be every bit as professional—and sometimes more valuable—than a recommendation to buy.

If your circumstances involve more than one country, speak to an appropriately regulated adviser before changing a pension, investment or estate-planning arrangement.
